Stuart Stokell - Musical Director

After founding the choir in 2005, Stuart returned as Musical Director in March 2019 after a few years away. He is passionate about music being accessible to everyone regardless of experience or skill.

As well as being musical director for Brampton and District Choir, Stuart is accompanist for Ovingham and District Choir as well as the accompanist/assistant musical director for Hexham Male Voice Choir.  His performance commitments take him across the North of England and parts of South West Scotland. His CV includes many solo organ and piano recitals, concerts as a singer as well as a stand-up comedian too – and he’s been known to direct and musically direct shows and even has written a panto or two. Stuart carries out a lot of work as an organist in supporting worship despite not having faith himself.  He plays all over North Cumbria for weddings and funerals in churches as well as the crematorium in Carlisle.  Another part of his work is as a secular funeral celebrant; a job he loves.

In recent years, Stuart has worked hard to gain several diplomas including a Licentiates from the Victoria College of Music and Trinity College London.  He also holds an Associate Diploma from the London College of Music.  He is also a fellow of the Society of Crematorium Organists, Guild of Musicians and Singers and the Royal Society of the Arts.  At the moment, he is also studying for Fellowship Diplomas for the Associated Board and Trinity College London.

Stuart was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year’s Honours List in 2021 for his work in the community of Brampton, Cumbria.

Jerry King - Accompanist

Born in Hampshire in 1965, Jerry started piano lessons in 1972 and joined the local church choir in Fareham in 1974. He continued to study music at boarding school in Devon and took up the church organ whilst living in Gibraltar in 1982. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Music & English in 1987, and initially worked for a music retailer in Sheffield. After marrying Joanne in 1989 he moved to her native Cumbria in 1991 first working for Omega Music in Brampton (Ellie was born in 1992 and Will in 1994) and then joining the music staff at William Howard School in 2005. He was organist at Lanercost Priory for over 20 years, transferring to his current post at St Cuthberts in Carlisle as Organist and Director of Music in 2012.

He joined the Brampton Chamber Choir in 2000 becoming its Musical Director in 2011, the same year he took on the role of accompanist for what was then the Brampton Players Choir. In what could euphemistically be regarded as spare time, and when he’s not engaged as organist for weddings etc, he teaches piano and guitar, runs a small part time recording company producing albums for local ensembles and live concerts and is occasional accompanist for the Brampton Players.
